Sofia to Athens, the long way. Two countries, two thousand metres of altitude, and one extraordinary road south through passes, gorges and coastlines almost nobody rides.
“Ten days. Two countries. Zero motorways. One trip you’ll spend years trying to explain to people who weren’t there.”

What to Expect
Bulgaria doesn’t get the attention it deserves. That’s exactly why we ride it. Mountain passes through pine forests, no traffic, no tourists, no motorways. An abandoned communist monument sitting alone on a ridge that you have to see to believe.
Then the border. The back roads below Olympus. Meteora rising from the plain like something from another world. The mountains of western Greece dropping to the Gulf of Corinth — turquoise water below, mountains behind, all the way to Athens.
Ten days. Two countries. Zero motorways.
The Route
Every road chosen for a reason. Every overnight earns its place.
Fly into Sofia. Meet the group, meet the bikes. Welcome dinner tonight — we go through everything you need to know. Tomorrow it begins.
Back roads through the Sredna Gora mountains from the start. Coffee stop in Koprivshtitsa — cobbled streets, painted houses, unchanged for centuries. Then down into the Rose Valley.
Climb the legendary Shipka Pass — hairpins through pine forest, wide views across the Balkan range. Then ride up to Buzludzha. Bulgaria’s abandoned communist UFO sits alone on a mountain ridge and there is nowhere else like it on earth. Descend to Plovdiv — one of Europe’s oldest cities.
Shorter distance, bigger landscape. The roads tighten as you climb into the Rhodope Mountains. The day ends at Trigrad Gorge — sheer limestone cliffs dropping straight to a river. Park the bike. Stand at the edge. Say nothing.
Deep into the southern Rhodopes on roads that twist through mountain villages most maps don’t bother naming. Gradually the mountains give way to the Struma Valley and you drop down to Petrich.
Morning starts with the Kresna Gorge — one of the great gorge rides in Europe. Then the border into Greece. Mountain roads skirting Olympus National Park, the highest peak in Greece rising to your right. Overnight at its foot.
Quiet back roads through Thessaly. Arrive at Meteora in the afternoon — monasteries on rock pillars rising 400 metres from the plain. Ride the circuit as the sun drops, the rocks glowing gold around you.
Over breakfast we put it to the group: walk into one of the monasteries this morning, or early start and be on the coast by early afternoon? Either way you win. Arrive Nafpaktos — Venetian harbour town. First proper sea views. You’ve earned it.
Cross the Rio-Antirrio bridge and head toward Patras. Then the Panachaikon mountains — one of the great climbs in European motorcycling. Views across the Gulf from the top. Then the descent to the coast. Tonight you sleep with the sea outside.
East along the Gulf of Corinth coast road, water to your right, mountains behind. Stop at the Corinth Canal and look down. Then the final run into Athens. Ten days, two countries, 1,430 kilometres. Tonight: farewell dinner. You know it.
